PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To fix an original reading end position in spite of the reading precision of an original by adjusting a time from the detection of the rear end part of the original by means of an original position sensor till the stop of a reading operation by means of a reading part in accordance with feeding speed at the time of feeding the original through the use of an original feeding mechanism. SOLUTION: When the rear end part of the original is detected by the original position sensor 12, CPU 21 reads the corresponding time (pulse number) by present original feeding speed from a memory area where the time (pulse number) till the stop of the reading operation &f8 previously stored, and sets it as the initial value of a step number counter. The step number counter executes count-down whenever a stepping motor 9 executes one step rotation and the original reading operation is ended when the count value becomes zero. The set pulse number is decided by considering a time lag from the removal of the original from the operator of the original position sensor 12 till the actual turning-off of the sensor 12. Thus, the original reading end position is fixed so that reliability is improved.
