835,633. Removing outer pulp and fibre from seeds. VERGARA, J. M. DE A. Oct. 3, 1957 [Oct. 3, 1956], No. 31051/57. Class 58. In apparatus for removing outer pulp and fibre from seeds of the African oil-palm and separating the pulp, fibre and kernels, the seeds are fed from a hopper 19 into a rotating cage 12 provided, at its ends, with edge-runner rings 11 turning on rollers 13. The cage comprises trapezoidal-sectioned steel rods each having a cutting edge pointing into the cage against the direction of its rotation. A shaft 7 passing through the cage and rotating in the opposite direction carries beating blades 17, which are set at an angle to the shaft to propel the fruit through the cage towards an outlet 31. The blades are arranged in staggered pairs, each blade of a pair being diametrically opposite the other. The rods are separated by spaces through which pulp falls into a tray beneath the cage. Kernels and fibre emerging from the outlet 31 carry a coating of oil and fall into a tank 26 full of water. Steam is passed into the tank through a pipe 28 and causes the oil to float and overflow into settling tanks (not shown). The bottom of the tank 26 comprises two flat walls, which converge and meet. A worm conveyer 30 carries the kernels from the tank to another hopper (not shown). |
