To clean combustion gases issuing from an upright furnace (2) into which solids for treatment are fed from an upper feed duct (13), the gap between duct (13) and the furnace is enclosed by a chamber (11), which is refractory lined or cooled by trickling water or by fluid circulated in a double wall, and gas is drawn from chamber (11) fast enough to prevent any leakage up duct (13), while vaporisable treating liquid is injected continuously or intermittently into the gas in or upstream of the chamber. Also claimed is a chamber (11) enclosing the gap between furnace (2) and feed duct (13) and having suction outlet (12) and treating liquid injector (20), and also a furnace so fitted. |
