A positioning device is used to mount the device on a support surface, preferably the lorry chassis. A lifting mechanism is used to grip, raise and rotate the container so that its mouth is facing downwards, and then transfer it onto a first horizontal conveyor, the same conveyor being used to return the cleaned container. At least one shower nozzle moving up and down in a first cleaning station extending along the conveyor directs pressurised cleaning fluid against the inside of the container. A manoeuvring device lifts the container off the conveyor and rotates it back into a position with the mouth facing upwards.
