Scandium-stabilised zirconium oxide contains an added metal oxide

Scandium-stabilized zirconium oxide contains a dissolved metal oxide, the cation of which has an ionic radius which is less than that of zirconium but greater than that of aluminium. Also claimed are an electrode/electrolyte/electrode unit in which one electrode and/or the electrolyte consists of the above scandium-stabilized zirconium oxide; and a high temperature fuel cell with the above electrode/electrolyte/electrode unit. Preferred Feature: The cation has an oxidation state of 4 and is selected from Cr, Mn, Sn, Tb and Ti.
