CYCLIC COMPOUNDS AND MEDICINAL USE THEREOF

Cyclic compounds represented by general formula (1) A &cir& COOR<1>, or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, medicinal compositions containing these compounds, and remedies for diabetes containing these compounds wherein A represents, (a), (b), (c) or (d), wherein R<2> represents halogenated lower alkyl; R<3> represents halogeno or lower alkyl; R<4> represents lower alkyl; and R<5> represents lower alkyl; and R<1> represents hydrogen, lower alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl. The compounds (1) or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof exert excellent hypoglycemic effects in a hyperglycemic state but do not affect blood sugar level in a normal or hypoglycemic state, i.e., showing no serious side effects such as hypoglycemia. Thus, they are useful as remedies for diabetes and preventives for chronic complications of diabetes.
