A vehicle crane which includes a columnar support (40), a framework (10) for fixing the support to a chassis (12) of the vehicle, a winch (66) which is mounted to the support, a boom (52) which is mounted to the support for pivotal (54) movement in a vertical plane relative to the support, a guide (64) on the boom, a cable (70) which extends from the winch (66) over the guide (64), a load attachment device (76) at a free end of the cable, a stop (104) on the cable which engages with the boom when the device (76) is raised above a predetermined level by the winch (66) acting on the cable and which then causes the boom to be pivotally (54) moved towards the vertical, a flexible element (82) fixed to the boom and the support, and a retaining mechanism (88) on the support which is engageable with a flexible element so that the boom is restrained against pivotal movement away from the vertical beyond a predetermined position.
