Parts are treated in wet chemical baths in a compact module by (a) transporting the parts in the horizontal position with the requisite spacing for the compact module; (b) placing the parts in a holder in the horizontal position; (c) transporting the holder into the compact module using the transport system; (d) subjecting the holder to swivelling, raising into the vertical position, advancing and lowering into the first bath, followed by raising and lowering into subsequent baths using the transport system; (e) swivelling the holder into the horizontal position; and (f) releasing and transporting the parts out of the compact module. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the above process, in which the compact module comprises an assembly of a carrier frame which includes one or more containers and which is attached to transport components for swivelling, raising, lowering and horizontal transport of one or more holders. The or each holder has retaining devices, which hold and grip the parts and which can be opened and closed, and receivers which also act as electrolytic cell contacts.
