The method involves measuring the relative permittivity, dielectric constant, and density or sound velocity of a fuel gas. The measurements are taken under reference or operational conditions. The calorific value is derived from the measurements. An Independent claim is included for an application of the method to measure calorific value or control heat supplied to consumer units, especially natural gas fired units. The gas, or a side stream of it, is passed, in addition, through a meter measuring volume or mass.
