Water injection for turbocharged internal combustion engine

Water is injected into the cylinder (1) towards the end of the power stroke where it cools the combustion gases before the exhaust valves (2) open. The exhaust gas and steam mixture is fed to the exhaust turbine (5) and then to a condenser (7). The condensed steam is separated from the gas and is recirculated to the water injection unit (9). The injection control unit ensures that the exhaust gas temperature is reduced to 1000 deg C or less before the exhaust valve opens.
