The inlet channels provided for the inlet valves (1,1',1'') run separately from one another, so that the one lateral inlet valve (1) allows fresh air into the cylinder separately from the central inlet valve (1') and the other lateral inlet valve (1''). The piston (5) has a combustion chamber trough (6) the centre of which is displaced to the axis of the cylinder. The injection valve (4) during the suction stroke with a crankshaft angle of 360 to 280 degrees,before the piston (5) reaches top dead centre, injects fuel into the cylinder. During the compression stroke, the injection valve, with a crankshaft angle of 85 to 30 degrees, before the piston reaches top dead centre, injects fuel into the cylinder.
