Fuel injector for IC engine

The injector (2) has a nozzle (12), a spring housing (14) receiving a barrel (10) and a plunger assembly (8) reciprocating in an internal bore (6) to inject fuel into a combustion chamber through an orifice. A timer mechanism timing plunger stop (87) arrests retraction of a timing plunger (22) at a set location while a hydraulic link length is cyclically set in response to a control signal. The plunger stop has a damper for absorbing momentum of the timing plunger as the plunger approaches the predetermined location. The control signal for varying timing during successive cycles is a variable pressure timing fluid, wherein a timing fluid feed passage communicates with a collapsible timing chamber during each successive injector cycle when the timing plunger is retracted.
