The kettle has a mechanically working device inside it and near the lid, which opens switch for kettle when lid is opened. The kettle has a container (2) for the liquid and a hinged lid (26), plus an electrical heating element. A mechanically operating device (44) is arranged inside the kettle, which, when the lid is opened, opens a switch provided inside the kettle and assigned to the heating element so that the latter is switched off or cannot be switched on. The mechanical device comprises an adjusting organ (46) working between the lid and the switch, to open the latter when the lid is open. The adjusting organ extends through a steam channel forming an automatic unit to stop the water boiling.
