Breeding plants and animals with reduced reproductive structures utilizing quantitative trait loci. Flowering is a costly process for plants, taking about 16 % - 30 % of photosynthate each year. Inhibition of flowering and reduced reproductive structure development will allow increased timber production, reduce damage to timber due to cones etc, and reduce costs associated with seedling removal. Two QTL for decreased cone number were identified by interval mapping and MIM analyses detected eight QTL. Selection of four QTL resulted in a 92 % reduction in cone number.
|
