<p>Recovering molybdenum from a reaction mixt., contg. molybdenum and phenolic impurities resulting from a molybdenum catalysed epoxidation of an olefin with an organic hydroperoxide comprises (i) adding aq. caustic to the reaction mixt.; (ii) separating an aq. phase contg. molybdenum, sodium and phenolic impurities; (iii) adding acid to the separated aq. phase to acidify the separated aq. phase; (iv) extracting molybdenum from the acidified aq. phase by contacting with a water insoluble tertiary amine (I); (v) contacting the reaction mixt. obtd. in (iv) with aq. base at pH 8-9 to provide a molybdenum contg. aq. phase; (vi) separating (I) contg. phenolic impurities from the molybdenum contg. aq. phase; (vii) contacting (I) contg. phenolic impurities with aq. base at pH at least 11 to remove the phenolic impurities; and (viii) separating (I).</p>
