A twin screw extruder drive system has a planetary gear drive (8) with two inputs (20, 40) driven by different motors (16, 30) and an output shaft (60) axial to the planetary gear drive (8). A connector (62) at the outer end connects with one extruder screw shaft (2). Two branch shafts (62, 64) run parallel to the output shaft (60) and are connected to the latter near to the planetary drive (8) by branch gear wheels (63, 65, 70). Additional gear wheels (73, 75) recombine the output from the branch shafts (62, 64) at their outer ends and connect with a gear wheel driving a second output shaft (84) with a connector (86) to a second extruder screw shaft (4) at the outer end. An Independent claim is included for the driving of a twin screw extruder using a main motor (16) and a lower output controllable additional motor (30) whose drive are superimposed in the planetary gear arrangement (8). Output from the planetary gear arrangement is taken both directly to the first screw shaft (2) and also through gear wheels (63, 65, 70) from the planetary gear output shaft (60) to two branch shafts (62, 64) driving the second parallel output shaft (84) and second screw shaft (4). Screw shaft (2, 4) speed is governed by controlling output and speed of the additional motor (30) so that screw shaft (2, 4) torque remains constant.
