PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound, showing, e.g. neutrodegeneration inhibitory orβ-amyloid toxicity inhibitory action, and useful for prevention or treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula I (R<1> and R<2> are each H or a hydrocarbon, where R<1> and R<2> form a 3- to 8-membered ring together with C; R<2> is H, a lower alkyl or aromatic; R<4> is an aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon or an acyl; X and Y are each O, S; and A-ring is an X-R<4> or benzene ring) or its salt, e.g. 3-(4-isopropylphenyl)-5-(4-methoxybenzyloxy)-2,2,4,6,7- pentamethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran. The compound shown by formula I is obtained by reacting a compound shown by formula II with a compound shown by the formula R<4> -L (L is an eliminable group). The compound shown by formula I is low in toxicity and side effect, and useful for prevention or treatment of various diseases, e.g. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease and peripheral neuropathy.
