PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially and advantageously mass-produce the subject compound useful as an intermediate for organic synthesis of vitamin E or a perfume at a low cost without causing problems in disposal of a waste catalyst by oxidizing β-isophorone with oxygen in the presence of amorphous carbon and a nitrogen- containing heterocyclic base. SOLUTION: (A) β-Isophorone is oxidized with molecular oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of (B) amorphous carbon or active carbon in an amount of 0.002-100 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. component A and (C) a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic base (especially pyridine) in an amount of 0.1-1,000 mol based on 100 mol component A in a reactional solvent at 0-200 deg.C under 0.1-10 MPa pressure to produce a reactional mixture containing 4- oxoisophorone, which is then recovered from the mixture by the distillation. Thereby, the objective compound is obtained. At least a part of the recovered reactional solvent can be circulated to the first step. |
