A jointing ring (1) for a spigot and socket joint comprises a sealing body (2) of elastomeric material which is located in and fills a substantial part of an annular recess (4) in a pipe socket, the sealing body having in a radially inner wall (9) an annular groove (10) in which is a resilient holding ring (11) which exerts a radially outwardly-directed force on the sealing body such as to urge the sealing body to expand radially and thereby retain the sealing body in the annular recess of the pipe socket. The resilient holding ring is preferably in the form of a spring of spring metal strip or ribbon wound into a coil. The spring may have 1 to 2 turns, or more, and be coiled to be oversized for the internal diameter of the annular groove by, typically, 10 to 15 %. The sealing body also has a nose part (8) to be disposed at the mouth end of the pipe socket to which the jointing ring is fitted for use, and an integral annular sealing part (7) which extends inwardly for sealing engagement with a spigot entered into the socket. |
