Wool fibers (1) are opened by a beater (3) and passed under a stream of nitrogen (4) into a duct (5). Electromagnetic radiation, e.g. from a laser (6), that is absorbed by plant residues but reflected by wool, is supplied to carbonize any vegetable matter.
