A tubular film (2) is welded transversely to its direction of motion (7) with jaws (8,9) to form a container (4). The jaws (8,9) move in a D-shaped path (14) to give a sealing path with a straight section (21). In this region a cam plate (17) acts on rollers (15,16) to deflect the jaws and produce a gap when a slide (13) moves to produce a folded seam (11).
