gamma -Type regulators for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor which contain as the active ingredient compounds represented by general formula (IA), nontoxic salts thereof, or hydrates of the same: wherein R<1A>, R<2A> and R<3A> represent each H, alkyl, alkoxy, halogeno, CF3, nitro, etc.; R<4A> and R<5A> represent each H or alkyl; R<6A> and R<7A> represent each H, alkyl, alkoxy, halogeno, CF3, nitro, etc.; E<1A> represents O or S; E<2A> represents alkylene; the ring moiety represents a benzene or pyridine ring; and nA is 0 or 1. Because of having the activity of regulating the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor, the compounds of general formula (IA) are useful as hypoglycemic agents, lipid-lowering agents and preventives and/or remedies for diseases caused by metabolic errors, such as diabetes, obesity, syndrome X, hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipoproteinemia, hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, circulatory diseases and hyperphagia.
