Prepn. of a multicolour paint formulation, comprising: (1) mixing 0.5-10 pts. wt. cellulosic thickener into 100 pts. wt. water; (2) adding sufficient base to the thickener soln. to give pH 7.5-12; (3) dispersing 15-90 pts. wt. first pigment into 100 pts. wt. pH adjusted thickener soln. to produce a first colour imparting thickener soln.; (4) mixing 50-300 pts. wt. neutralised latex, 5-80 pts. wt. solvent, 0.5-20 pts. wt. plasticiser and 5-80 pts. wt. aq. 1-20 wt.% hectorite clay soln. into the first colour imparting thickener soln. to produce a first colour imparting latex component; the neutralised latex being made by (A) free radical aq. emulsion polymerizing at pH below 3.5 a monomer mixt. comprising (a) 45-85 wt.% vinyl aromatic monomers, (b) 15-50 wt.% alkyl acrylate(s) and (c) 1-6 wt.% unsatd. carbonyl cpd(s)., in the presence of 0.5-4.0 phm phosphate ester surfactant(s) and 0.5-4.0 phm water insol. nonionic surface active agent to produce a latex, and (B) neutralizing the latex with ammonia to pH 7-10.5; (5) dispersing 15-90 pts.wt. second pigment into 100 pts. wt. pH adjusted thickener soln. to produce a second colour imparting thickener soln.; (6) as (4) using the second colour imparting thickener soln. to produce a second colour imparting latex component; and (7) mixing the 2 colour imparting latex components into a second hectorite clay soln. contg. 0.5-10 wt.% clay in wt. ratio second hectorite clay soln.: total colour imparting latex components = 1:2-4:1, to produce the multicoloured paint formulation. |
