The number plate has a plate surface, which is provided with a designation (4), facilitating the identification of the vehicle. Also an illumination strip arrangement (6) is provided, which is located behind the designation or the number plate surface (3). The designation or the plate surface is made of material which is at least partially transparent. The plate surface and the designation are designed as a common, inherently stiff and plate shaped plastic material foil, with the designation produced by stampings. The electrically activatable illumination foil arrangement and the plastic foil are arranged in a common holding frame (5), to be fixed at the vehicle.
