The appliance generates in sequence coloured toner images on an image carrier (9) for transfer to an intermediate transfer belt (19) to form the coloured image. The coloured image is then printed out. Additional lubrication is provided between carrier and belt by generating arbitrary point toner images with point diameters of the order of 150 to 300 mu m. These images are too small to be visible on the printed image.
