<p>The invention relates to a device for transmitting colour still images with a complex colour image signal of any colour television standard over a signal channel which has a low bandwidth in relation to the colour image signal. In particular, any generally available telephone channel can be used for transmission. A video camera for example serves as an image signal source at the transmission end whilst a conventional television receiver is used to reproduce the images at the other end. The invention is based on the lengthening of the image signal of selected individual video images in terms of time. A complex colour image signal in the form of a sequence of pixels converted into binary values serves as an input signal, said complex colour image signal representing a single whole or half-image. According to the invention, said binary values are converted into an analog signal element before transmission. This signal element alternately represents a pulse length or an interpulse period. The successive signal elements form a rectangular wave. Each signal element contains at least two intervals: one interval is dependent on the binary value, the duration of said interval corresponding with said binary value; and one interval is of constant duration.</p> |
