The aim of the invention is to increase the closing force of a control valve with little actuation force. Said control valve has a valve element (4) located in a valve body (2). In the closed position, said valve element rests on a valve seat (5) in order to block a fluid passage (3) formed in the valve body. The valve element can be moved into the open position by the axial movement of an actuating rod (6). According to the invention, an annular piston area (8, 8') is provided on the actuating rod (6) and/or on the valve element (4'), said piston area being connected to the fluid passage (3) via a compensating line (9).
