The deformation method uses a deformation tool (6) displaced relative to the rivet element (11), with detection of the point of contact between them and axial displacement of a measuring sensor (7) relative to the deformation tool until it contacts the workpiece (12). The difference between the points of contact with the rivet element and with the workpiece is compared with an acceptable value range before initiating the deformation process.
