In a process for regenerating steel slags and iron carriers, such as for example electric furnace slags, converter slags, fine ores, dusts from the steel making industry and rolling mill scale in order to obtain pig iron and environmentally compatible slags, the volumetric ratio of molten slag to iron bath is selected to be greater than 0.5 to 1, preferably 0.8:1 to 1.5:1, and SiO2 carriers, such as for example foundry sands, blast- furnace sands and/or fine ores are added to the slags in order to establish a slag basicity (slag ratio) (CaO/SiO2) of between 1.0 and 1.8, preferably between 1.2 and 1.8, for an Al2O3 content of between 10 and 25% by weight, based on the slag. In the process, a hot-air blast is blown up and coal, if appropriate together with inert gas, in particular with nitrogen, and, furthermore, if appropriate oxygen or hot air is blown through the iron bath.

|
