The road marker comprises a component such as a block (6) of at least partially translucent material, e.g. glass or a plastics material such as polyurethane or polyester, with a cavity (5) containing one end of an optical fibre (2). The fibre is connected with others in a bundle to a light generator. A marker can be made up of a number of identical or similar blocks which can be rectangular parallelepiped, truncated cone or cube, and each one has a mechanical coupling between its cavity and the end of the optical fibre, e.g. in the form of a packer. The cavity is preferably cylindrical in shape and has its axis pointing towards at least one visible, light-diffusing face of the block.
