PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce high purity nitrogen by converting hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and hydrogen contained in a material air into carbon dioxide and water, cooling them down to the normal temperature, removing carbon dioxide and water in the material air through adsorption and then separating it into nitrogen and oxygen through a rectifying column. SOLUTION: Trace hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and hydrogen contained in a material air heated through compression, preheating and heating processes are caused to react on oxygen in the air by means of a catalytic reactor 14 and converted into carbon dioxide and water. The material air delivered from the catalytic reactor 14 is cooled clown to normal temperature and the carbon dioxide and water are absorbed through a switching use adsorption column 18. The material air 30 delivered from the adsorption column 18 is cooled down to cryogenic temperature and subjected to preliminary rectification at the lower column 21 of a rectifying column 20. Oxygen rich liquid oxygen 40 and liquid nitrogen 42 supplied to the upper column 22 are rectified at the upper column 22 such that the liquid oxygen is stored at the lower part of the upper column 22 and nitrogen is separated to the upper part. |
