PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-quality base for recording materials which is adequate as various kinds of bases for recording materials, such as photographic paper and thermosensitive recording paper and is improved in surface smoothness and rigidity simultaneously with good balance up to a sufficient level by providing at least one surface of raw paper consisting essentially of wood pulp with a layer contg. a swellable inorg. layer-like compd. SOLUTION: This base for recording materials is formed by providing at least one surface of the raw paper essentially consisting of the wood pulp with the layer contg. the swellable inorg. layer-like compd. The ratio of the wood pulp in the raw paper is preferably >=60 wt.%, more preferably 100 wt.%. If the base for recording materials is provided with the layer contg. the swellable inorg. layer-like compd. in such a manner, the swellable inorg. layer-like compd. embeds the fine recessed parts on the front surface of the raw paper. As a result, the surface smoothness of the base for recording materials is improved and the rigidity thereof is improved as well. |
