PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser diode on which cracks are hardly generated on the member to be mounted on a pedestal. SOLUTION: A laser diode chip 22 has an oxide strip-type heterojunction, and it comprises an n-GaAs substrate 2, an n-Al0.4 Ga0.6 As layer 5, an active layer 6, an n-Al0.4 Ga0.6 As clad layer 8, and a p-GaAs contact layer 9, etc. A submount (n-GaAs substrate) 14, having a resistance value of 1 mΩor higher, s arranged under an alloy layer 13. The submount 14 is jointed on a pedestal 27 by an alloy layer 15. The junction surface 14a with the pedestal 27 in the submount 14 has a polished surface.
