PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make high speed consecutive photographing possible by constituting a camera so as not to perform compression processing by a data compressing means while consecutive photographing operation is continued by a silver salt image pickup unit. SOLUTION: The compression processing by the data compressing means is not performed while the consecutive photographing operation is continued by the silver salt image pickup unit. The signal processing circuit 11 of the camera is operated in response to a control signal from a CPU 1, and a predetermined signal processing including conversion from an analog signal to a digital signal is performed. Also, the signal processing circuit 11 transfers processed electronic image data to the CPU 1 in accordance with a request from the CPU 1. The compression processing of data is executed by the CPU 1, and the data is transferred to a nonvolatile memory 14 formed by an EEPROM or the like and is stored. In the case that a consecutive photographing mode is set, image data corresponding to a given number of frames is kept at a RAM 1a in an uncompressed state. In the consecutive photographing mode, time-taking operation such as the compression processing of digital data or the like is executed after the completion of the consecutive photographing operation.
