PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a catalyst from being poisoned by an oxidizable gas such as CO and lessen wasteful use of a fuel gas by installing a system, which temporally alters the addition amount of an oxygen-containing gas for carrying out oxidation of one ore more oxidizable substances, which are contained in the fuel gas and inhibits the reaction, in the fuel gas side electrode of a low-temperate type fuel cell. SOLUTION: While the amount is intermittently and/or periodically changed, an oxygen-containing gas such as air is added to a fuel gas side electrode 2 of a single cell 1 of a phosphate type fuel cell, having an oxidizing agent side electrode 4 and an electrolyte matrix 3. Preferably, the addition is controlled so as to keep the alteration of the cell voltage monitored with the lapse of time within 10%. The inlet of a port 6 for an oxygen-containing gas in addition to the fuel gas is temporarily closed by a rotator 82 rotated in controlled manner in a space of an oxygen-containing gas adding apparatus 81 and supply of the oxygen-containing gas is started and stooped. Consequently, the oxygen-containing as is supplied or stopped in the state that CO has been sufficiently adsorbed, on the catalyst in the fuel gas side electrode 2 or in the state that CO is oxidized. |
