The invention relates to new tricyclic 2,3-benzodiazepine derivatives of general formula (I), stereoisomers and acid addition salts thereof and to pharmaceutical compositions containing the same, wherein the main substituent meanings are as follows: R<1> and R<2> represent independently hydrogen, halogen, a C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, nitro, trifluoromethyl or optionally substituted amino group, X represents hydrogen or chlorine atom, Y represents chlorine or bromine atom, A represents a 5-membered heterocyclic group containing 1 to 3 nitrogen atoms. The compounds are suitable for treating conditions associated with muscle spasms, epilepsy as well as acute and chronic forms of neurodegenerative diseases.
