A processor (33) determines the height at which the shielded loop field detector (24) is to be set above the relevant conductor, from the distance between adjacent conductors and the resolution characteristic. A scanner (23) then positions the detector accordingly. If the spatial characteristic of the detector is not known a procedure is given for providing a device with information to generate that characteristic. There is an independent claim for a device to measure the spatial resolution of the magnetic field detector.
