The invention relates to a device for the protected output of an electronically transmitted and stored document which is provided with or is subject to electronic copy protection, comprising a storage unit for storing the document and making it available for output, said storage unit being provided on a local computer system and a local processing and control unit which interacts with the storage unit and with external data processing equipment via a data communications network. Said local processing and control unit is configured in such a way that an additional operation and/or additional data can be linked to the document in response to at least one on-line contact via the data communications network, and in such a way that said linked document can be prepared for output. The inventive device also comprises an output unit, said output unit being connected to the local processing and control unit and being configured for outputting the linked document as required, and an interrogation and verification unit. Said interrogation and verification unit interacts with the storage unit and the processing and control unit, and is set up to detect any violation and/or override of the document copy protection, and in response to an actual violation and/or override to prevent the processing and control unit from producing the linked document.
