The rule (1) incorporates a base element (10) carrying several constituent rule elements (11, 12, 13) which are made of glass and are provided with a measuring pattern (14). These constituent rule elements are welded to one another at their adjoining faces. The claimed method for manufacture of such rule includes production of a measuring pattern of the constituent rule elements, mounting of these elements onto a base element (10), and welding of the constituent rule elements to one another. The claimed position measuring unit with a rule (1) incorporates a scanning device (2) with a light source (21) and a photodetector (22).
