The bearing shell (1) or bush has a surface (8) incorporates a fine marking groove (4) which has no detriment to the bearing function. Also claimed is a manufacturing process for the bearing shell. The depth of the groove (4) is less than or equal to the maximum roughness of the bearing surface (8). The marking is pref. characteristic for the type of bearing shell, and can be detected by an optical recognition system.
