Stereoscopic image interpolating apparatus and method

A pair of right and left actual images are photographed at different viewpoints, for forming an interpolated image at a viewpoint positioned between the viewpoints of the right and left actual images. A shift vector detecting means (8) obtains a shift vector representing a dislocation of patterns between the right and left actual images within a search range being set based on a viewpoint distance between the right and left actual images. A shift amount calculating means (9) calculates a shift amount required for an interpolation in each block of the right and left actual images based on viewpoint information and the shift vector. A pair of image shift means (3,13) shifts each block image of the right and left actual images by the calculated shift amount. A pair of multipliers (4,14) multiples predetermined coefficients (k, 1-k) with block images of the right and left actual images. And, an adder (5) adds the block images of the right and left actual images to obtain an interpolated image.
