FIELD: polymer production. SUBSTANCE: biodegradable polymers applicable as detergent and cleaning means components are formed from monoethylenically unsaturated C<SB>4</SB>-C<SB>8</SB>-dicarboxylic acids and/or their salts, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, which after hydrolysis or saponification contain one or several hydroxyl groups covalently bound to C-C chain, and, if necessary, monomers capable of taking part in radical copolymerization. Polymerization is carried out in aqueous medium at 40-180 C via partial neutralization of monomers bearing acidic groups followed by hydrolysis or saponification. Polymers exhibit 60% degradation over 28-days period. Polymers can be used in preliminary processing of cotton, especially on boiling, cooking under pressure, and bleaching, and as auxiliary means in textile printing and currying, and also for inhibiting water hardness and as dispersants.
