The printer has a relative spacing setting device, for adjusting the printing head (1) for different paper thicknesses or different paper layers, using an adjustable carriage (5) displaced relative to a printing counter-bearing surface (2) under control of a sensor. The latter is provided by a light reflection sensor (8) between the carriage and a facing surface (1d) of the printing head, coupled to an evaluation circuit for controlling an automatic setting drive for adjusting the printing head spacing relative to the printed surface (7).
