PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain isobutylaldehyde in a high yield, by dehydrating 2 -methylpropane -1,2-diol. SOLUTION: 2-Methylpropane -1,2-diol of the formula (CH3 )2 C(OH)CH2 OH is dehydrated by using dehydrating catalyst [e. g. a solid acid catalyst (e.g. alumina, etc.), an inorganic acid catalyst (e.g. sulfuric acid), etc.] preferably at 80-500 deg.C to obtain isobutylaldehyde in ready separating operation of the catalyst from the reaction solution without requiring an expensive apparatus. Methylpropane -1,2-diol can be obtained by reducing 2 -hydroxyisobutyric acid or 2-hydroxy isobutyric acid. |
