PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a prophylactic or treating agent for chronic cardiac failure on the basis of the inhibition of hypercardia by formulating a specific vitamin compound as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This prophylactic or treating agent contains a therapeutically effective amount of an active vitamin D derivative as an active ingredient. The active vitamin D derivative is preferably 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 , 1α- hydroxyvitamin D3 , 1α,24(R)-dihydroxyvitamin D3 , 1α,24,25-trihydroxyvintamin D3 , etc. The prophylactic or treating agent is especially effective for one or more kinds of chronic cardiac failure-transiting diseases selected from pulmonary heart disease angina, valvular heart disease, myocarditis, myocardiopathy, cardiac failure after myocardial infarction, and cardiac failure after cardiac transplantation. The therapeutically effective amount of the active ingredient is 0.01-100μg/day.
