PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject polymerization catalyst capable of polymerizing propylene in high activity for a highly stereoregular polypropylene by polymerizing a branchedα-olefin to a catalyst comprising a solid titanium catalyst component, an organoaluminum compound, and a compound having an ether bond. SOLUTION: This objective preliminary polymerization catalyst is obtained by polymerizing a branchedα-olefin selected from 3-methy-1-butene, 3-methy-1 pentene, etc, to a catalyst comprising (A) a solid titanium catalyst component comprising magnesium, titanium, a halogen, and an electron donor, (B) an organoaluminum compound,(C) a compound having >=2 ether bonds through the intermediary of a plurality of atoms shown by pref. the formula ((n) is 2 to 10; and R<1> to R<26> each having C, H, O, etc.), at a ratio of 0.01 to 1,000 g based on 1 g of the compound A. Preferably, the catalyst contains (D) an organosilicon compound and (E) an organoaluminum compound.
