PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an extremely short response time by making a nematic liquid crystal mixture comprised of a plurality of liquid crystal components having different dielectric anisotropy, a specific liquid crystal component comprising a compound containing a tolan-4,4'-diyl unit and an optically active component. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal component having a tolan-4, 4'-diyl unit contains a compound represented by formula I (wherein R<1> is a 1-12C alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl or alkenyloxy; R<2> is a 1-8C alkyl or alkoxy; Z is -COO-, -CH2 CH2 - or single bond; and one of L<1> and L<2> is F and the other is H) and/or a liquid crystal mixture further contains at least one compound represented by formula II (wherein alkenyl* is an alkenyl having up to seven carbon atoms; L* is H or F; and R* is F or a 1-12C alkyl being unsubstituted or substituted by one CF3 group or F). |
