PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject emulsion that has excellent adhesion to the base material and can give the hydrophilicity and heat resistance to the surface of the base material by hydrogenating a diene monomer-aromatic monomer copolymer, sulfonating the hydrogenation product and emulsifying the sulfonated product in water. SOLUTION: This subject emulsion is prepared by hydrogenating a copolymer from (A) an aromatic monomer unit as styrene,α-methylstyrene, vinylnaphthalene) and (B) a diene monomer unit, preferably 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, 1,3-pentadiene, sulfonating the hydrogenated copolymer and emulsifying the sulfated product in water. The amount of the component A is 1-90 wt.%, preferably 5-80 wt.% based on the total of the components A and B. The resultant polymer emulsion manifests excellent resistances to light and heat and is useful as a coating agent or a binder resin.
