PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing acrylic acid in high yield by oxidizing an acrolein-containing gas with molecular oxygen in the presence of a specific compound oxide catalyst to selectively control formation of propionic acid. SOLUTION: This method oxidizes an acrolein-containing gas (e.g. a gas containing acrolein produced by oxidizing propylene) with molecular oxygen in the presence of a compound oxide catalyst, containing Mo, V and/or Nb, Sb and Sn [e.g. Moa Zb Nic Sbd Sne Sne Xf Yg Oh (Z is V and/or Nb; X is Si and/or Al; Y is Cu and/or W; (a) is 1 to 100; (b) is 0.1 to 50; (c) is 1 to 100; (d) is 1 to 100; (e) is 0.1 to 3; (f) is 0 to 200; (g) is 0.1 to 50; and (h) is a number determined by extent of oxidation of each component), preferably at 180 to 400 deg.C and 0.5 to 10 atm. It is preferable to use 1 to 20 mols of molecular oxygen per 1 mol of acrolein. |
