PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove fluorine and chlorine and turn chlorofluorocarbon into nonvolatile inorganic fluoride and chloride by reacting fluorine and chlorine in chlorofluorocarbon with calcium oxide, barium oxide or a mixed oxide of them. SOLUTION: Fluorine and chlorine in chlorofluorocarbon are turned into harmless inorganic chloride by the chemical reaction of chlorofluorocarbon with calcium oxide, barium oxide or a mixed oxide of them at 400-650 deg.C. For the purpose of carrying out the reaction effectively, chlorofluorocarbon is introduced into hot calcium oxide in the flowing state. Fluoride or chloride thus formed is a safe inorganic compound to be handled easily.
